5 Diet Red Flags

Does your diet make you feel good?

We are all unique and research shows that the way we respond to food is unique too.

Studies on twins by Professor Tim Spector in King’s College London has demonstrated that an individual’s biological reaction to the same meal could be very different even if they are genetically identical.

It is important to find an eating pattern that work for you and makes you feel energised and happy.

Here are a few things to watch our for!

1.      Eat Less Move More

Oh if only it was this simple!

Weight loss is so much more complicated than calories in vs calories out - we are influenced by our mindset, environment, hormones, stress, energy, gut bacteria…..

Obsessing over counting points / calories / sins takes the joy out of eating and we lose touch with our hunger and fullness cues.

2.     Quick Fix

Rapid fat loss doesn’t take time to address the underlying reason for your weight gain. As soon as you stop the ‘diet’ the weight is likely to go back on. Look at your eating habits and make lifestyle changes so that you can stick  to long lasting healthy choices.

3.     Miracle Product

There is no magic pill, shake or supplement that can melt away fat. Some of these products contain ingredients that are dangerous or could interact with medication that you are taking.

Spend your money on fresh nutritious food instead!

4.     Restrictions / Rules

A diet that dramatically restricts a particular food or has strict rules is unlikely to be successful long term. This type of eating pattern can make you feel guilty for eating certain things and classing foods as ‘good’ and ‘bad’ can result in an unhealthy relationship with food.

It is important that your diet is flexible and fits in with your lifestyle.

5.     One Size Fits All

Although there are some eating patterns that have been shown to be beneficial for our health, e.g. a Mediterranean type diet, we all have different nutritional requirements depending on our age, activity, likes and dislikes, lifestyle, stress levels, health etc.

Don’t jump on to the latest diet without giving it some thought – vegan, vegetarian, paleo, keto, low carb or gluten free - may not be the right choice for you at this time. However when you find a lifestyle that works for you and makes you happy it will be easy to stick to!
