Hormones

Hormone Balance

When we think about hormones it is usually around times like puberty, pregnancy and menopause but these chemical messengers are hard at work each and every day. They are involved in numerous body systems including appetite, motivation, energy and metabolism.

Weight gain, poor sleep, low mood, cravings and digestive complaints

It is because of the synergistic way in which hormones work that focussing on a single symptom can often be ineffective and counterproductive. For example, using a restricted calorie diet to reduce belly fat might stimulate weight loss in the short term but longer term if the team of hormones are disrupted there is going to be a predisposition to store more fat around the middle!

The complexity of our hormones means that unfortunately there is no quick fix. We need to look at optimising what we eat and drink, making sure our digestion is good, having a well-functioning liver and keeping our blood sugar levels stable. Lifestyle factors such as sleep, exercise, stress all play a part too.
