Are You Looking For a Sweet Treat?

During my 5 Day Sugar Challenge in November one question that came up was:

‘What can I eat after my meals to satisfy my sugar craving’

This got me thinking about different options that will provide nourishment as well as satiating the desire for something sweet.

Eating a dessert every day can become a habit where the body expects a sugar ‘hit’ after each meal. Sugar after lunch can contribute to an afternoon slump in energy and after dinner puddings provide energy that you are not going to use up and is therefore more likely to be stored as fat.

My advice would be try not to eat too late at night, don’t have a dessert every day, be mindful of your portion size and if you do have something sweet savour and enjoy it!

Here are a few ideas that will provide nutrition in addition to satisfying the sugar craving:

Fruit Crumble

Choose any fruit you like and play around with different types of nuts in the crumble mix. Pecans taste amazing with apple and cinnamon!

Stewed Apples or Pears

This is a brilliant dessert; I always keep a few portions of stewed apple in the freezer. Add cinnamon, ginger or all spice and top with Greek yoghurt or homemade granola.

Pancakes / Waffles

This is a really easy recipe to make and the pancakes freeze well too - ,just reheat in the toaster! Cover with chia blueberry jam for a sweet but nutritious dessert!

Raspberry Chia Mousse

My favourite at the moment! Just blend 1 cup of raspberries with 2 cups of milk (I use almond milk) add 2 tbsps. of chia seeds mix and leave in the fridge overnight. It makes a delicious mousse type dessert that tastes good for breakfast too!

Fruit Salad

Make up your own delicious fruit salad with a rainbow of different fruits.

Cheese and crackers

Add in some seed crackers, a few slices of apple and a chunk of Caerphilly cheese – perfect after a meal treat.
