World of Nutrition

Hydrating Foods

Still enjoying the sunshine?

Keeping hydrated is important in this heat and foods with a high water content can help, here are a few foods that comprise of at least 94% water:

Cucumber

Unpeeled cucumbers are 95% water! But they also contain vitamin C, A folic acid and silica which a trace mineral that is important to our connective tissue.

Lettuce

As a rule, the darker the leaf the higher the nutrient content but don’t ignore iceberg lettuce it is good to eat a wide variety of foods.

Celery

I love celery! It tastes great roasted as well as in salads or dipped into hummus, it contains vitamin C, B vitamins and fibre.

Radish

Easy to grow in the garden, 95% water, a good source of vitamin C and folate and tastes great in salads – what’s not to love about radish!

Green Peppers

Bell peppers are a good source of nutrients including vitamin C (80mg / 100g!), beta carotene, vitamin K and B vitamins. They also contain beneficial phytonutrients making them a fantastic addition to your summer foods.

       Tomatoes

In addition to vitamin C and B vitamins red tomatoes also contain a phyto-nutrient called lycopene which has been shown to help protect the skin from UV radiation - so perfect to eat in the summer. Eat your tomatoes with some olive oil, as this can improve its absorption.

Put all of these together and you have got a delicious salad that will provide you with not only nutrients but also that all important hydration – enjoy!
