50 Different Foods In One Week

How many different (healthy!) foods do you eat over 7 days?

I read a fantastic review paper a couple of months ago, by Miguel Toribio-Mateas, which discussed how important the gut microbiome is to our health.

Studies have consistently demonstrated that a disruption to the bacterial population that lives in our gut can have a significant impact not only on our health but is also a factor in the development of some diseases.

The article states that ‘individuals suffering from ill-health tend to show narrowing in microbial diversity and that this renders them more susceptible to infection and consequently negatively affects their innate immune function’.

Highly processed foods such pizza, biscuits, cakes, burgers, energy drinks etc.  and foods containing artificial sweeteners, preservatives and emulsifiers have been shown to dramatically reduce the number of bacteria in the gut. 

So what can we do to support our microbiome?

Our gut bugs thrive on a Mediterranean type diet that contains a wide range of brightly coloured fruits and vegetables. Eating a rainbow of different colours provides not only essential vitamins and minerals but also phyto-nutrients and fibre which are all necessary for a happy and healthy microbiome.

I have been testing this with friends, family and clients and have had some great feedback. Most people find that the first few days are easy but by the end of the week there is an incentive to buy a different vegetable or add a different spice to meals in order to ensure that the 50 foods are reached!
